Can Drinking Coffee Help to Improve Your Endurance?

Coffee is very popular beverage because it is delicious and has stimulant effects. But did you know that coffee may have an additional benefit in the gym? Many studies have shown that caffeine, the stimulant found in coffee, can boost performance and stamina.

In this article, Hodgson, et. al. investigated whether consuming coffee has the same impact on physical performance as consuming caffeine. In the experiment, individuals consumed either coffee that delivered 5 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per kilogram (kg) of body weight, caffeine (a matching 5 mg/kg body weight), decaf coffee, or placebo drinks one hour prior to exercise. The study showed that athletes who consumed caffeine or coffee drinks prior to cycling had significantly faster performance times on a cycle trial (by ~5%), compared to those who consumed decaf or placebo drinks.

This study, in conjunction with other research, shows that caffeine can be beneficial during physical activity. So, next time you’re thinking of going for a run, or simply want to go to the gym for a quick workout, a cup of coffee may just contain the energy boost you need.
